Open Gate, internal X-OCN, and production features

Open Gate and internal X-OCN were two of the most requested FX-series features. The FX5 can record full-sensor 3:2 Open Gate footage for reframing, anamorphic workflows, and vertical social crops without needing an external recorder for RAW. Sony also added de-squeeze support for 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.6x, 1.8x, and 2.0x anamorphic lenses.

Operability borrows more from CineAlta / VENICE-style workflows than a standard Alpha stills camera, including the BIG6 menu layout and a shared production menu language with FX6 / CineAlta cameras. Monitor & Control app support enables wired and wireless monitoring/control, and Catalyst Prepare 3.0 is planned to support FX5 workflows.

Firmware 2.0 plans

Sony says a planned Firmware 2.0 update in 2027 is expected to add higher-resolution high-frame-rate capture up to 240 fps in X-OCN, XAVC S-I recording in 3:2 Open Gate, a vertical-shooting-optimized interface, and a frame-grab function. Specs for future firmware remain subject to change.
