What is new versus older PEN cameras

The PEN line dates to 1959. The last digital PEN many markets saw was the Olympus PEN E-P7 in 2021, which had no built-in EVF and no weather sealing. OM SYSTEM’s new PEN puts a rangefinder-style body back in the lineup with:

• A built-in OLED viewfinder (the E-P7 used the rear screen only)
• IPX1 sealing, a first for the PEN series
• Phase-detection AF and AI human / pet detection (E-P7 used contrast AF)
• A dedicated CP button for computational modes
• A new BLS-7 battery instead of the E-P7’s BLS-50

It is not a stacked-sensor OM-1-class body. Amateur Photographer notes that the 20.4MP sensor matches the class used in cameras such as the OM-5, not the stacked sensor in the OM-1. IPX1 is also a lower rating than OM-1 / OM-5 IP53 sealing. The pitch is everyday carry and travel, not flagship weather sealing.

Profiles, computational photography, and the new kit lens

A front Profile Control switch gives one-press access to film-like Color and Monochrome presets. Color presets include Film Rich Color, Film Vivid, Film Soft Tone, and Standard (Natural). Mono presets include Film B&W, Film IR, Film Low Contrast, and Standard (Monotone). Profiles can also be applied to video except S&Q. OM SYSTEM’s OI.Share app adds a Profile Library for saving looks from photos on a phone.

Hold the CP button and turn the control dial to switch among Tripod High Res Shot, Handheld High Res Shot, Live ND (ND2–16), Focus Stacking, HDR 1 / 2, and Multiple Exposure.

The new M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 III is a retractable 28–84mm-equivalent zoom with IPX1 sealing, 8 elements in 7 groups, and Focus Stacking support. Sold separately it is $349.99. The matching BLS-7 battery is $99.99 and the BCS-7 charger is $119.99, both scheduled for late October.
